About Mohiner Ghoraguli/Moheener Ghoraguli

by buzzer on Nov.22, 2009, under ,

মহীনের ঘোড়াগুলি(Mohiner Ghoraguli) means Moheen's Horses, was a Bengali independent music group from Kolkata, established in the year 1970. At that time the lyrics and the compositions of Gautam Chattopadhyay, the Vocalist of Mohiner Ghoraguli, were new.

They were quiet similar to the urban folk movement led by Bob Dylan in the 60s and were of a very personal or social nature. In their times they were almost unknown but in recent years they have undergone a critical re-evaluation much like the Velvet Underground.

"Aabaar Bochhor Kuri Pore" in 1995 was released by Gautam as a compilation of Mohiner Ghoraguli covers by contemporary artists. Since then they have been considered to be an unrecognised pioneers of the jibonmukhi style and ethiucs. Though modern Bangla bands like Fossils and Insomnia are influenced by grunge as their songwriting was strongly rooted in Bangla folk and also American urban folk. Prithibita Naki is their signature song. It is a reflection on how television creates urban alienation.

Original Lineup of the band

Gautam Chattopadhyay- vocals, lead guitar, saxophone, lyrics
Abraham Mazumdar - piano, violin
Pradip Chattopadhyay(Bula) - bass guitar, flute
Ranjon Ghoshal - lyrics, emcee, visuals, media relations
Biswanath Chattopadhyay(Bishu) - drums, bass violin
Tapas Das(Bapi) - voice, guitar
Tapesh Bandopadhyay(Bhanu) - voice, guitar

This was the Line up till 1978

As Tapesh Bandopadhyay left the band in 1978, Raja Banerjee joined the band to replace Tapash.
